Independent Opening Scene Comparison – By James Vlahos
A film that was an inspiration for our opening scene from my view was the film “United 93” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=km-dhumCD1w

I chose to do this as my comparison because when deciding on what our opening sequence would be about this film came into mind as not long ago it was shown to us by our teacher. The reason why this was an inspiration to me was because of it's strong moral and ethical views upon stereotypical young male Muslims as being associated with terrorism. Our aim in our media project “The C.H.A.S.E” is about common media and perhaps personal views upon typical terrorism views since a few years ago. Our aim was to play with the audience's mind and change the perspective view upon a terrorist to show young male Muslims shouldn't be viewed upon as a terrorist by others by how they look, but the individual they are.

The trailer “United 93” relates well to our media project because of the views of the people who are hijacking the plane are in fact young Muslims which can be associated along to the terrorist line showing how they looked normal and casual but in fact plotting something devastating. Which lead us to build up suspense with a classy looking young Muslim carrying a brief case with a depressed type of attitude played with Arabic music in the background along with voice overs and subtitles. We also decided to use a innocent looking common white girl who people would never suspect or imagine to be involved with terrorism, and twisted the story into her being one against foreigners but in fact leading to her becoming the terrorist aiming at an individual for how he looks.
What inspired me from “United 93” was the trailer and how much suspense and tension is being built up from watching it, always expecting to no what is happening next and wondering how things are going to turn at. As it had used a major stereotypical view of where terrorist aim, which is the Aeroplanes. However what really interested me was in the way it shows the victims of the crisis in a emotional way showing selfishness to whoever is trying to harm others who is not involved with the causes of hatred.

Our idea's we have had for our opening sequence was purely based around strong stereotypical views and morales leading us to our production name “Morale Productions”. Which gives the audience a great view of what to expect within our opening sequence.

Looking at this film poster of United 93 is very effective. Such as the dominance of the plane as it's placed up above a main importance to the American mind “The Statue of Liberty” this is known throughout the world and is in many films. What really interests me is how the plan is titled downwards towards it creating suspense in wondering whether or not that plane will crash considering it's abnormal view as it's not straight but going downwards. Also what I found very clever and effective is the small buildings behind the statue of liberty which is the two towers effected by the 9/11 attack which was one of the things that kicked off a great fear of terrorism upon the world. This film poster I found quite inspiring as it's shows the moral of the story but not fully in depth leaving a story to be told.
