review of filming

Monday 28th February 2011

Looking over some of the film i believe that due to the battery life of the camera we were unable to film as much as we wanted. More shots of each scene would have given us more option and variety when editing. we may have o go back to London for some re- shots.

Looking over content recorded

Monday 28th February 2011

Today in class, we looked over all of the content that we recorded for our main task over half term. We uploaded the content onto the computer, and looked over the scenes, all the angles used, and made sure that the content works and functions properly so it can be edited and proceeded with.

Gaining Permession to Film

Friday 25th February 2011

This photo is showing the passes that we used whilst filming in Waterloo Station. When we started filming in the station we were told to stop as we do not have permission. To be able to film we had to go the the stations reception and ask the manager for his permission to film, to do so we also had to explain why we were filming? what we were filming? and how long we were going to take? After answering some questions we all (including actress who does not attend out college) were allowed to film. We were all given a pass that would be shown to anyone in the station that queried what we where doing.
without gaining this permission our whole film would have been ruined and we would have had to think and come up with a whole new storyline and location.
We remained out of peoples way and got on with filming, we didn't cause many distractions other than triping over someone as i walked backwards tracking mo walking towards me, but sincerness and manners helped us through the day and we like everyone else there got on with what we needed to do.

Photo shot of the locations and filming

Friday 25th February 2011

Here are a selection of photos taken before and on the date of filming to get an idea of location/ setting and lighting. The photos allow us to look and see for places that we are considering that may not work well due to poor lighting or being too busy. we didn't really have to worry about sound because we will be using  a voice over for the majority of the film, therefore that was one less aspect to worry about.
The few photos at the end of Mo in front of the London eye were taken as the battery on the camera run and out and as an alternative we could use the photos to create a flash back arrangement having them pop up and then disappear to show intensity of that moment, slowing the film right down and concentrating solely on him.

Voice over

(I TRIED TO ADD THE SOUND CLIP, BUT WAS UNABLE TO... We will do it together in class)
Friday 25th February 2011

This is the voice over that will be used in the opening scene of our main task. This voice over will be played alongside the arabic based instrumental chosen by the group. This will be used to set the atmosphere, the mood, and to allow the potential audience to get a general better understanding of the narrative of the main task that we are currently creating. Furthermore, it allows the audience to sympathise with my character, as he is continuously being negatively socially labelled, which leads to this short monologue allowing my character to express his emotions and this information is vital for the audience to absorb, allowing them to get a better understanding of what is going on, and how my character feels. This will also make further sense deeper into the main  for the audience.

Confirmation of recording day and time

Tuesday 22nd February 2011 - 21:23 PM

At this time, i received a phone call from Katie, confirming that tomorrow (23rd February 2011) we will all be meeting at New Malden Station at 10:00 AM in order for us to make our way to london for us to start recording. We will all be there at 10:00 AM sharp in order to use our time as effectively as possible, and to ensure that we record with a wide range of shots, angles, lighting, and to make sure that it is all done professionally without the pressure of time impacting our performance negatively.

We will spend the whole day in London, and record as much as we can with a wide range of shots and angles to make sure that we have everything that allows our main media project to be successful.

Introduction speech for main task

Tuesday 22nd February 2011

In my spare time, i had to construct the voice over for the introduction of our main task. I did this by speaking in arabic, and saying powerful words. Initially the plan was for me to do the voice over with the chosen music in the background, but as i am working at home, my resources are limited and so i will leave it for us to do as a group. In contrast, i have done the general recording of myself speaking, which will be used in the opening scene of the main task.

What i said in arabic is translated below:
All I do is try to make a living
Translation: Ana 3ayesh b' 7al balad, 7atta isht8il oo shoof mostaqballe.

Coming from a middle eastern country, why do i have to be judged?
Jaye min Il Sharq l Awsat, Leish l 3alam T'tala3 fiye B 7al taree2a.?

Is it because of the look, my culture...my beard?
7al shi la2ano fi 3ande la7ye, aw la 2anno ana jaye min balad 8areeb, ma3 2enno ana 5al2an b 7al balad, wleken, b7es eno 2ana 8areeb.

Being born in this country, and i respect the laws and the cultures of this country, why do the people not respect me like i respect them?
Ana kawne 5al2an b 7al balad, oo be7trem nezam 7al balad oo takaleed7a bitmanna min l 3alam illi bitshoofne b 7al taree2a, te7tremNE mitil ma ana be7teremon... oo mish kill l 3alam mitil ba3da.

Finishing the development of the script

Tuesday 22nd February 2011 - 7:16 PM

I constructed two potential scripts for the other main character that will hopefully be acting beside me tomorrow. There are two scripts in order for my group to decide which is the best one and which script is more appropriate to use.

This is the first script:

Potential opposition Script 1 –
Why don’t they just go back to their countries? They steal our jobs, they threaten our people... I hate them, I hate every single one of them, and who do they think they are? Stupid asylum seekers, with their beards, and their scary looks. They will get whats comming to them, for sure. I don’t like them. And im sure our side feel the same.
 (BOLD = TO EMPHASISE)
This particular script revolves around indirect offensive remarks that could be used to portray the general stereotype of foreign individuals within London, and it also signifies the hate and aggression this particular individual has towards different cultures, which merges well with the storyline and the whole overall theme of the main task.

Potential opposition script 2 –
Argh, I've had enough of these people wondering around the place like they own and rule everything! but that's life I suppose, I'm not against multiculturalism, but now I see the drawbacks of it. They will get whats comming to them sooner or later. Who do they think they are.
This is a much softer approach, which contains key words which signify aggression or opposition towards foreign individuals. Although it is less direct and generally less full on than the first script, this script has a sense of anger, aswell as dignity for this particular character, which needs to be created in order for the storyline to be surprising as well as as effective as possible.

Script Development.

Tuesday 22nd February 2011 - 7:03 PM

Today, i focused on developing the script for the main other main character that will be acting beside me when recording for our main task. I had to develop a script that merges well with the storyline, and that will assisst the audience in understanding the narrative of the main task,  and to keep everything consistent and professional. Furthermore, i had to ensure that the script revolves around the theme of the main task, which is the ideology of stereotyping foreign individuals in the 21st century.

Actor

Tuesday 22nd February 2011

Today there were some slight complications with the actress who was going to be in our film. she was unable to make the required date and time and therefore i have organised another actress to stand in her place. we will be using Jade Hampton a friend who studied performing arts.

Actors/Actress

Friday 25th February 2011
Photos of actress/actors

This is Mohedene Masri. He will be playing the role of a Muslim  man
who will be traveling to London. he is portrayed to look
like someone who is hiding something , we have specifically
chosen him to look like a stereotypical Middle-Eastern
foreign individual situated in London, who is Middle class, and is trying
to make a better living in London than at his home country.

Mo is in his final year at Coombe sixth form . he relieved a A* in his practical GCSE drama . He is perfect for
character that needed to be played.

Mo is apart of the media group for the filming and therefore it
was easy to use him for the required time for filming.

This is Jade Hampton our actress who will be playing the role of an ordinary girl traveling
to London but with a bold secretive nature.
Jade studied at bishopsford High school studying performing arts and then moved on to continue with dance and performing arts. she is currently working
whilst trying to pursue her career in dance and
acting.

Jade was available for filming after our previous
actress had to cancel.

Here is the costume design for Mohedene, he is playing a Muslim traveler who makes his way to London who is meant to look suspicious and weary. we have decided to put him in a smart outfit along with a briefcase. this brief case will be a main aspect of the filming as it is meant to signify the stereotypical judgement of a suitcase that is being carried by a foreign individual.  this will make the difference between the two actors/actress more obvious and will represent the differences in stereotype and culture.

Final Actors&Production

Thursday 17th February 2011

Further in the lesson, we finalised the actors that will be in the main final production, as well as our groups production name.
The production title of our group will be: Moral productions. This is powerful, and effective, as it fits in well with the overall theme of the main task. In addition, the final and confirmed actors will be Myself (Mohedene Masri), and a friend of Lydia's called Basma. Both of us will make a powerful contrast, as my Arabic culture will effectively contrast with Basmas english culture, which adds to the overall effectiveness of the movie.

Script development at home

Thursday 17th February 2011 - 7:10 PM

I went home and proceeded by developing a powerful opening script, which i will read to powerful and atmospheric arabic themed music posted earlier on the blog for the words to have the best impact possible, and for it to engage the audience, and build further into tension from the very start of our main task. I will use a deep voice, which is clear and slow, to really build upon the storyline, and to really emphasise my characters pain, the pressure he goes through and to really set the atmosphere and tension from the very start of the main task, allowing the potential viewer to really be at one with the movie, and to be engaged and want to see and hear more.

Location Research

Finding a location  for our film is crucial as we need to get the right location that will emphasis  he message and stereotypical views that we want to portray in out film.

The synopsis of our film is that there is a western Muslim man and European  women traveling to London although there is an event which surprises and breaks all generic conventions.

For our film evolving terrorist  we want a location that uses generic conventions and therefore we need a busy location and a well know area. From this we have decided to film in London and this destination is often used with low budget British films. we then had to decide where about in London, although we wanted (with gained permission) to film in a train/underground station to continue to follow generic conventions and the stereotypical places that surround a "terrorist". We decided that Waterloo station as this is in constant use and recives a large number of commuters. Waterloo is resonably large so we could shoot in a number of locations within the station.

There are a number of Briitsh films shot in London which range back from Charles dickons to Bridget jones diary. Because of the dominant role played by the city in the British media and proven by the vast amount of tourist and media attention gained, the number of british film shot in London is huge.  Filming here follows conventions of a British film of the london city itself to emphasis the background and heritage of the film.

As well as london itself there are many  known films shot in Londons underground.
sliding doors 1998
bulldog jack 1934
A more resent film is "creep" 2004 a film itself using the underground not for conventions of a terroist but proved how intense a destination like this can have on an audience.

The Bourne ultimatum is an American spy film which used Waterloo station for a scene within the film. Because of "Bourne ultimatum" has a good reputation of being a fantastic fast pace chase action film, through many different situations, we though that this being a similar description of our film that Waterloo would be the best location to use.

Independant Research - Collateral

Collateral (2004) - Directed by: Michael Mann, Written by: Stuart Beattie

Although this movie is about a cab driver finding himself taken hostage by a contract killer. When looking at the opening scene and our opening scene that we want to complete.  We would want both our movie and collateral to look very similar though narrative and genre. At the beginning of the sequence in collateral, there is a man carrying a suitcase in a public place (an airport) and walking though people at a busy period during the day he is also looking suspicious and wearing sunglasses. He then bumps into someone were they swap bags and then carry on with their business. In our opening sequence we want to have a young suspicious man walking through a public place in London, maybe at  Waterloo station or New Malden station were the main protagonist is walking fast, we also want to involve bags  in the main narrative which we think would make the audience question what is in there and what is going to happen. however to make the plot more interesting we could put in a chase scene to build up the tension. so when looking at collateral and our opening scene we want to create both tension and suspense to catch the imagination of the audience.

Music For Our Film

17th February 2011

We have decied on a piece of music for our final piece of course work, as our theme for the coursework was action thriller, and we are using the idea of stereotypical terrorism in our piece we thought this music would add an extra effect to the tension of the meaning behind the opening sequence.

Ideas revolving around our main task

Thursday 17th February 2011

Today, as a group, we were discussing what could be done for our main task in depth. We decided that we are getting another actor to act beside me (Mohedene), and the general theme of the main production will be about general stereotypes of other races, with a moral teaching at the end of it.

We all divided the task up into reasonable secions, and allocated things to for each individual in our group. For example, i am going to be acting, blogging, and writing the script, Kate will be taking shots, recording, and improvising for recording, Lydia will be filming and James will also be filming and Editing, and doing background research and coming up with ideas continuously to potentially make our main task even better.

In this lesson, we took a really mature and organised approach towards our final task, and as i type, we are still organising dates for filming, and coming up with further ideas, production titles and developing further into our main task.

Independent Opening Scene Comparison – By James Vlahos
A film that was an inspiration for our opening scene from my view was the film “United 93” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=km-dhumCD1w

I chose to do this as my comparison because when deciding on what our opening sequence would be about this film came into mind as not long ago it was shown to us by our teacher. The reason why this was an inspiration to me was because of it's strong moral and ethical views upon stereotypical young male Muslims as being associated with terrorism. Our aim in our media project “The C.H.A.S.E” is about common media and perhaps personal views upon typical terrorism views since a few years ago. Our aim was to play with the audience's mind and change the perspective view upon a terrorist to show young male Muslims shouldn't be viewed upon as a terrorist by others by how they look, but the individual they are.

The trailer “United 93” relates well to our media project because of the views of the people who are hijacking the plane are in fact young Muslims which can be associated along to the terrorist line showing how they looked normal and casual but in fact plotting something devastating. Which lead us to build up suspense with a classy looking young Muslim carrying a brief case with a depressed type of attitude played with Arabic music in the background along with voice overs and subtitles. We also decided to use a innocent looking common white girl who people would never suspect or imagine to be involved with terrorism, and twisted the story into her being one against foreigners but in fact leading to her becoming the terrorist aiming at an individual for how he looks.
What inspired me from “United 93” was the trailer and how much suspense and tension is being built up from watching it, always expecting to no what is happening next and wondering how things are going to turn at. As it had used a major stereotypical view of where terrorist aim, which is the Aeroplanes. However what really interested me was in the way it shows the victims of the crisis in a emotional way showing selfishness to whoever is trying to harm others who is not involved with the causes of hatred.

Our idea's we have had for our opening sequence was purely based around strong stereotypical views and morales leading us to our production name “Morale Productions”. Which gives the audience a great view of what to expect within our opening sequence.

Looking at this film poster of United 93 is very effective. Such as the dominance of the plane as it's placed up above a main importance to the American mind “The Statue of Liberty” this is known throughout the world and is in many films. What really interests me is how the plan is titled downwards towards it creating suspense in wondering whether or not that plane will crash considering it's abnormal view as it's not straight but going downwards. Also what I found very clever and effective is the small buildings behind the statue of liberty which is the two towers effected by the 9/11 attack which was one of the things that kicked off a great fear of terrorism upon the world. This film poster I found quite inspiring as it's shows the moral of the story but not fully in depth leaving a story to be told.

Research on film institutions

When looking at institutions and film productions, you can see that it is very unlikely that our film will be made by universal and working title productions, as the movie is a low budget British film, one of the only ways we could get our film produced professionally is to create our own website on it and how the sequence is produced.

There are many institutions to choose from which helps us to create a full Finnish low budget movie. When looking at the BBC Film Network you can see that this institution helps make new homemade films get broadcast  online, these movies can be animated, music videos, drama's, comedy and documentary. At this website  people upload their movies and then they get rated by the public according on how good they are. This i think is a very good way to promote small scale movies as its free and producers may see it and use the idea.

Film 4 also develops and co-finances films ad it is known for working with the innovative talent in the UK, whether new or established films. This may work for our film as we would have to submit out ideas, however as we have already have filmed thee first two minutes it isn't likely that they would use our idea.

Vertigo films is a UK media company that was founded in 2002 to create and distribute commercially driven independent cinema. Vertigo was first in creating Europe's first all 3D movie STREETDANCE 3D This entered in the box office at number one beating Disney's prince of Persia and therefore becoming one of the most successful UK independent film of all time. Vertigo are very successful in promoting films as they use social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter as they generate a lot of interest from the targeted audience.

Potential Lighting for the main task

Tuesday 15th March 2011

Further into the lesson, our group discussed the potential atmosphere we would like to set for the main task, which mainly revolved around the lighting and location. We were discussing weather to film at night or in the afternoon, and which time of day would potential make the best impact.

If we record at night, it may add to the whole atmosphere and the vibe of the task, by signifying danger, confusion, anger, agression and rebellion, whereas if we record in the afternoon, it may be easier to record, as the scenery would be much more visible, and it would be easier for the group to record at this time, and would be more productive and enjoyable as we could allocate more time to it as we would have much more time before it gets dark.

Potential Locations for the Main Sequence

Tuesday 15th February 2011

Today, we discussed the potential locations for our main task as a group. We are considering all different types of locations, as well as qualitative factors such as the time it will take us. As a group, we sat around a table, and gave ideas as to where we could situate the task, ideas such as London, Brighton, Wimbledon and Marble Arch came up. Furthermore, we proceeded with discussing the opening sequence, and how it could be done.

The location that we all were predominantly talking about was London. It is a good location as the shots that we can take would signify the location to the potential audience, and would make more of an impact due to Londons general busy, complex and advanced environment.

Final preliminary task upload

 Friday 11th February 2011

Above is our final preliminary task upload. After much technical disruption and general confusion, we finally managed to import the final edited video onto our blog. We included all of the necessary shots, angles and general dialogue in order for us to meet the success criteria of the preliminary task. Furthermore, we decided that we did not need non diegetic music to add to the atmosphere of the preliminary task, we stuck with diegetic sound to add to the realism of the task, and because generally, non-diegetic music did not merge in well with any of the scenes, and so therefore as a group we decided to keep it natural, original and real.

Continued Editing

Thursday 10th February 2011

Today we mainly edited and gained constructive criticism  by our teacher on our preliminary task so far. We edited all of he sequences in order to make the clip as consistent as possible, and we chose the main clips to use, as well as the best angles to include in the task.

As a group, we edited and criticised the editing in order for the video clip to meet all of our expectations, and the preliminary tasks success criteria. Also, after showing the clip to our teachers, they were impressed with what was produced, and they gave us feedback as to how to improve our editing. Our teacher said that everything flowed consistently, but we have to ensure that there is a match on action between each cut, and to do that we have to make sure that there is action between every scene. He gave us this feedback after witnessing a scene that took around two seconds to start.

We continued editing towards the end of the lesson, and we plan to continue with editing during our lunch period and through tomorrows lesson as the preliminary tasks deadline is for tomorrow (11/02/2011).

Continued Editing

Tuesday 8th February 2011

Before we proceeded with the preliminary task editing, as a group, we edited the first blog by adding images of the scenery of the location we decided to record at. The images showed the lighting, the mise en scene, the general atmosphere and the potential vibe/mood that will be set in this location. Furthermore, as we were uploading the video clips, we all decided which clips are to be used and which clips should be deleted in order for our preliminary task to have the best, most professional impact as possible.

After spending a little while deleting the clips we are not going to use, and making decisions on how to proceed, we mainly focused on editing our preliminary task video clips, and we experimented  more and figured out how to use the iMovie HD software. We put all of the video clips onto the iMovie HD software, and started to proceed by putting all of the video clips in the right order, and ensuring that we have a range of video clips that contain a wide range of shots of angles, and dialogue to have the best impact possible to potential viewers.

Editing in class

Monday 7th February 2011

Today Lydia bought the camera into college after looking after it over the weekend. Today our main objective was to start editing the footage, and making the sequences consistent, and well edited, with Non-Diegetic music added and a range of shots, angles, and dialogue included into the overall final edit in order for it to meet the success criteria of the preliminary task.

Although we tried hard to meet our objective, we had trouble with using the software and uploading the footage from the camera onto the MAC PC. We experimented with a wide range of USB cables, and fire cables to get the footage, but it still did not work. After much experimenting, and assistance from our teachers, we managed to get the footage up onto the mac, but then had trouble editing the footage.

This whole process took a while to do, and as a consequence of which, we had 10 minutes left of the lesson.
We decided to proceed with editing the blog towards the end of the lesson, and to proceed with trying to get the footage onto the MAC PC in tomorrows media lesson (8/02/11).

Preliminary Task Recording

  Friday 4th February 2011

Our group, which consists of Mohedene, James, Katie and Lydia started recording for our preliminary task on Friday afternoon, at around 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM. We took all of the necessary shots, at all of the relevant angles, and ensured that all of our shots, and dialogue met the general success criteria of the premilinary task, which is named "Feed The Fish".

Myself (Mohedene), Katie and James were the protagonist actors in the preliminary task, i was the individual who asked the questions and who was acting dominant in the task, and Katie was the individual that replied to my questions and "Fed the fish", James was acting as a dead body and was put behind me in a crawled up position to really set a tense, serious and dangerous atmosphere for the potential viewers.

Lydia also played a major role in the whole preliminary task, as she professionally recorded the task, and came up with a wide range of constructive and positive ideas, which helped the task meet the general success criteria also, which was to experiment with a wide range of shots, and use the correct dialogue.

Furthermore, we picked up a tactic from our teacher Mr. Roberts, and that tactic was to film early before the scene begins and stop the camera recording a while after the scene ends in order to get the whole scene in camera without any action or dialogue being missed, and when we edit we can allow the clip to start in perfect consistency with the next clip, which will allow our preliminary task clips to flow professionally.

After recording, we handed the camera over to Lydia to charge it, and to look after it, and see if any extra pre-class editing can be done to it.

Friday 28th January 2011

We chose our location at New Malden car park, and have taken potential still shots of what we could use to proceed  with the task, this allowed us to see what lighting we needed, the potential atmosphere that will be set if we used this location to record,  and at what time of day we could start recording. We chose to shoot at  3.30 pm in order for it to give us bright lighting with the start of the sunset which we think would add the the intensity, and the general realistic feel of the preliminary task.
